National Symbols

This section includes a detailed description and explanation
of many of the national flags and symbols that are used in the Republic of Istvanistan.

Flags of the Republic

National Flag

The Flag of the Republic of Istvanistan is essentially a Saint Andrew's Saltire Cross with each section bearing one of the national colors. The colors traditionally stand for cardinal directions, white being north, red being south, blue being west, and black being east. The cross is golden, representing the central unifying force. The flag is completed with the coat of arms in the center.

Civil Ensign

The Civil Ensign of the Republic of Istvanistan is essentially the National Flag with the Coat of Arms removed. The Civil Ensign is the flag typically used by private citizens, hoisted over property such as private yachts. This shows the properties owner's nationality, but details it as not being under state ownership.

Presidential Standard

The Presidential Standard of the Republic of Istvanistan is the personal banner of the President of the Republic, used in conjunction with the National Flag on occassions of the President's presence. It is a squared shape with a golden fringe. The four cardinal colors are displayed in each quarter. The Greater Arms is placed in the center.

Prime Minister's Standard

The Prime Minister's Standard of the Republic of Istvanistan is the personal banner of the Prime Minister of the Republic. The flag is used in conjunction with the National Flag on occassions of the Prime Minister's presence. It is a squared shape with golden fringe and cardinal colored quarters, much like the Presidential Standard, but the borders of the quarters are joined by a golden cross stretching across the flag. In the center of that cross are the Lesser Arms.

War Flag

The War Flag of the Republic of Istvanistan is the flag used by the Istvanistani Armed Forces in conjunction with the National Flag and in the past was carried into battle with the soldiers. The War Flag is a Cavalry Flag, with the two triangular edges. It bears a golden fringe on all sides except the hoist, where the flag would be hung from a pole, and the cardinal colors form quarters like in the Presidential and Prime Minister's Standards. However, these are not true quarters as the Upper and Lower Right colors include the triangular edges along with the proper quarters.

Coats of Arms

The Greater Coat of Arms is filled with symbolism itself. The golden eagle surrounding the national colors shows nationalism and unity, which binds us. The sword represents strength, and the sceptre represents wisdom. Gripped by both claws is a banner that reads "Libertas Infinitas".

If you wonder how we developed the coat of arms, here is how. We spent some time searching for a coat of arms that was stately enough, and dignified enough, to be used. We settled on the Moldovian coat. We then replaced the interior shield with the national colors, removed the cross from the beak, added the banner, and changed the content of the left claw to a sword. When all was said and done, we had a coat which looked very, very good. So here, we shall thank Moldova for their beautiful national symbolism, which has so much inspired ours.

The Lesser Coat of Arms consists of only the shield in the center of the Greater Coat. It includes the four Cardinal Colors and can be found in places such as the Prime Minister's Standard, although it is less frequently used by itself compared to the Greater Coat.

The State Motto

The state motto is "Libertas Infinitas". A latin creed which translates into English as Eternal Liberty. Thanks to Sprite for the translation. The motto clearly indicates our devotion to democracy and liberty.
